Asbestos danger sign

What is Mesothelioma and how does it relate to Asbestos?

The primary cause of mesothelioma cancer is asbestos exposure. We already know that when asbestos-containing materials are disturbed, asbestos fibers are released into the air, increasing the possibility of inhaling or ingesting them. The problem with asbestos is that it is a mineral extremely resistant to fire, moisture, and chemicals, used mainly before the 90’s as a construction material for residential and commercial structures, with a variety of applications from attic insulation to textured finishes on ceilings and walls. Due to its resistant properties, after inhaling or ingesting it, asbestos fibers cause inflammation of internal tissue, disrupting organ function and consequently, developing mesothelioma cancer.

Asbestos Industry

Even after asbestos companies knew that the material was hazardous to the health of workers and their families, they continued with the production of asbestos products. These products are still responsible for the asbestos exposure at work and home, mostly during constructions and renovations of properties and buildings constructed 20 years ago or more. Second-hand exposure is also a risk, just as the cigarette smoke affects another person different to the one smoking, if a constructor worker or a worker of another occupation with contact with asbestos doesn’t protect himself wearing the proper gear to manipulate the material, he/she can, at home, expose the people living with them to the asbestos fibers.

Asbestos Victims

Mesothelioma cancer is common among military veterans who on military bases and naval ships were exposed to asbestos. Workers in power plants, refineries, steel mills, construction sites and auto production facilities were also at risk. Within the occupations at risk are also boilermakers, mechanics, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, and machinists. The symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are shown decades later; this is the reason veterans and retirees are the most affected and diagnosed with the conditions.
